Malcolm's Bio
We learn by doing......
Malcolm MacPherson:
Malcolm is a lifelong learner, fully engaged with life! My education is academic high school with my main achievement - learning, scientific method! My undergraduate education is mostly social science - economics, and history with some business studies from Western University. My favourite subjects were the Economic History of Canada, International Trade and Finance, Management Science with some Operations Research, and Organizational Behaviour and Management of Change. In the 1990s, I completed an Adult Teaching Certificate in the Community College Instructor Development Program at the University of New Brunswick. For interest, I also completed the Canadian Securities Course before Covid as part of inquisitiveness and continuous learning. Since the early 1980s, I’ve had a strong interest in well-being, as well as workplace mental health! Just before Covid, I was introduced by Professor Colin Farrelly of Queen’s University to the Science of Well-Being Course with Professor Laurie Santos at Yale University online! I loved this course, and followed an eclectic reading, and self-directed study program upon completion in the area of well-being and happiness!
I am an aspiring learner in sub stack social media with Professor Paul Bloom’s “Small Potatoes” sub stack! Paul is a Professor Emeritus from Yale University and is currently a psychology professor at University of Toronto. Also, on sub stack, I follow Professor Ethan Mollick of the Wharton Business School at University of Pennsylvania, and his sub stack on the latest in generative AI called “One Useful Thing”.
In work, my favourite occupations were hospitality - Hart House at U of T, international aid - CODE - working on Queen St., West in Toronto - community college instructor working with vulnerable populations - George Brown College in Toronto and in self-employment - having fun with a farm based bed-and-breakfast and cabin business in the 1990s, and recently experimenting as a DJ in Kingston with backyard parties, as well as a little canoe and kayak rental business which I’m in the process of trying to sell with support to an aspiring young grade 10 business student.
I enjoy creating social media and worked at learning creative writing for three or four years at the North Kingston Community Centre in Kingston. I thoroughly enjoyed this community program.
Besides being a fully engaged legacy community member of the University Club of Queens, I was also a former board member of the club! My experience suggests the staff at the club are very compassionate and supportive to the club membership! These positive behaviours create a nourishing environment, where members can flourish!
Currently, my interest is in launching my adult education business, which focuses on well-being, and social science applications and interventions in positive psychology. This includes strength-based coaching! This proprietorship is called “Malcolm MacPherson”……
